Brian M. Davis is a Partner of VLP. Brian focuses his practice on client counseling relating to trademarks, including worldwide trademark clearance and the prosecution of U.S. and foreign trademark applications. He also has experience with copyright and other intellectual property issues, such as domain name disputes (including the UDRP), licensing programs and other intellectual property-related agreements. Brian has provided strategic trademark, copyright and domain name advice for a wide variety of clients, from Fortune 500 companies to small start up entities. During his career, Brian has represented the owners of some of the world's best known brands in the footwear, banking, consumer electronics, home improvement, retail clothing and other industries, including Reebok, Timberland, Rockport, Belk, Safeco, T.J. Maxx, Marshalls, Lowe's, Invesco, Assurant, Wachovia and Bank of America.
Prior to joining VLP, Brian was a partner with the Charlotte office of Alston & Bird where he was a member of the Trademark & Copyright Group from 1999-2010. Brian served as that group's acting Practice Group leader in 2008, and was the Practice Group Leader in the Charlotte office of Alston & Bird from 2009-10. Before joining Alston & Bird, Brian was an associate with Taft, Stettinius & Hollister in Cincinnati from 1996-99.
Brian is currently the Vice-Chair of the Intellectual Property Owners (IPO) Trademark Office Practice Committee and a member of the International Trademark Association (INTA) Trademark Office Practice Committee. Brian is the former co-chair of the North Carolina Bar Association's Trademark and Copyright Committee of the Intellectual Property Law Section and has served on various INTA committees (including the Geographic Indications Committee and Treaty Analysis Committee) since 2004. Brian is a frequent speaker on trademark topics and has given presentations at the annual meetings of INTA, IPO, the North Carolina Bar Association, and the North Carolina Bar Association Trademark and Copyright Committee. Brian has also written client advisories and articles published in IP Links and The Charlotte Business Journal on a number of domain name, trademark and copyright issues. He has been listed in The Best Lawyers in America since 2008.
Brian received his J.D. from Washington University in St. Louis School of Law in 1996 where he graduated in the top 5% of his class, was the John J. Cummins Scholar, a member of the Washington University Law Quarterly and Order of the Coif. He received his B.A. from West Virginia University in 1992. Brian is a member of the North Carolina and Ohio State Bars.
When he is not practicing law, Brian is active in various community and charitable organizations. In 2010, he was elected to serve as the first President of the Charlotte Community Tool Bank, the initial expansion of the ToolBank charitable tool-lending program outside of its original base in Atlanta (see www.toolbank.org ). Brian is also on the Advisory Board for Room at the Inn, a local non-profit (www.rati.org) and is a Cub Scout Den Leader.
